"Fire dampened down”
A helicopter and monsoon bucket were used to dampen down a controlled vegetation fire after smoke caused problems at Waitati yesterday.
A wind change in the early afternoon meant smoke from a controlled burn of a small number of wind rows on private property being cleared on Doctors Point Rd drifted across the road and into homes, Waitati deputy fire chief Jim White said.
The Otago Regional Council was notified and Dunedin City Council rural fire team and helicopter with monsoon bucket were called in to dampen down the fire."
I asked Mr Dippie for comment.
I would be interested to know who pays for the multitude of fire-engine visits and nearly 2 hours of helicopter use.
In terms of air quality, our house is still unpleasantly smoky, and it seems that most of the dwellings down towards short street remain enveloped in smog. This doesn't look like clearing in the near future.

I have yet to receive a comment from Mr Dippie, but the DCC rules on carrying out burning make interesting reading in this instance.

We are fortunate enough to have Fire Service coverage here in Waitati, meaning that a fire permit was not required, but I doubt good practice was followed in this instance, given the required response from the Otago regional Council to Order a helicopter dousing of the area.
