Barn Dance at Opeke?

From Allan Dippe - 5th April 2006

Dear Doctors Point Residents

Hello, another quick update on progress at Opeke! Not much to report except things are going quite well and soon we hope to have the first 5,000 native plants planted along the coastline walkway we have been building. We just need some rain now as it has been so dry for planting.

Our efforts at restoring the existing native bush have also been rather rewarding already, removing the Pines, Gorse, Sycamore and Hawthorne has let the light in and little natives are self seeding everywhere.

We are presently working on removing the last of the trees and branches that remain. If you need firewood you are welcome to help us with that on one of the cut your own firewood days. See the form enclosed.

I would also love you to come to the Opeke Barn Warming Party and enclosed is an invitation to this. Its fairly early notice but remember to keep the 24th of June free. It is on then because that's the closest weekend to the shortest day and we may as well celebrate the winter solstice in style. The band is called Head to Head and they do play a good selection of songs most people know and love.

You will need to dress as a farm animal i.e.. a sheep, duck, goat, horse, dog, alpaca, cow or pig etc. But if that is a bit riskay for you, you may come dressed as a farmer

it should be a fun night and please bring all the kids you can muster up as well ....... prizes for the best dressed animals and best dressed Mr Farmer & Mrs Farmer too. Competition for the best voice impersonation of the farm animal of your choice will be a feature and a great way to "Bless the Barn".

Have a happy Easter. Regards

Allan Dippie

"Not much to report" seems like a fair statement, given that the site is strewn with timber, trees are gone, birds evicted and the site looks like it has been levelled.

Whilst I agree that the seedlings that HAVE been planted appear to be settling in nicely, it is now abundantly clear that Willowridge Developments have absolutely no intention of planting the general area of the section beyond the narrow "coastal margin" - it is true now that any previos "character" or floral history on the site has now been expunged.

Don't be fooled... this is a concious effort to combat any argument that the site has an important character that should (have been) be maintained.

I'm sure the barn warming will be a blast, but I personally won't be endorsing the activities with my presence, in fact, I kind of feel like some demonstration / banner printing might be in order....

I hope that people were happy with their free timber though.
